4 Days Gorillas and Wildlife Safari in Rwanda, 4-Day Double Gorilla Trekking Safari

DAY 1: KIGALI TO VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

Morning (6:00 AM – 8:00 AM)

Begin your adventure early with pickup from your Kigali hotel around 6:00 AM. Your professional guide will provide a comprehensive briefing about the day ahead during the scenic 2-hour drive north to Volcanoes National Park. The journey takes you through Rwanda’s lush hills, passing local villages, agricultural terraces, and stunning panoramic views. Stop briefly at a viewpoint for photographs of the volcanic peaks that define the park.

Arrival and Briefing (8:00 AM – 10:30 AM)

Arrive at Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Musanze town for your permit confirmation and final trek briefing. The park rangers will assign you to a specific gorilla family based on fitness levels and preferences. You’ll receive detailed instructions about gorilla trekking etiquette, safety protocols, and photography guidelines. All trekkers must maintain at least 7 meters distance from the gorillas, speak in whispers, and follow the ranger’s directions precisely.

Gorilla Trek – Volcanoes National Park (10:30 AM – 3:00 PM)

Embark on your first gorilla trekking experience through the misty slopes of Volcanoes National Park. The trek typically lasts 4-6 hours, depending on where the gorillas spent the previous night. You’ll hike through montane forest at altitudes between 2,200-2,500 meters, navigating dense vegetation, volcanic soil, and bamboo thickets. The physical challenge is worthwhile—when you encounter your assigned gorilla family, you’re allowed one full hour of intimate observation. Watch silverbacks assert dominance, mothers care for their young, and juveniles play among the foliage. This is a life-changing moment you’ll treasure forever.

Evening (3:00 PM – 6:00 PM)

Return to your lodge in the afternoon for rest, refreshment, and celebration of your remarkable morning. Enjoy dinner while sharing stories of your gorilla encounter with fellow trekkers. Spend the evening acclimatizing to the area’s altitude and preparing for tomorrow’s drive to Bwindi.

Overnight

Accommodation: A mid-range lodge such as Kinigi Guest House, Virunga Hotel, or similar (depending on budget preference). These offer comfortable rooms with fireplaces, hot showers, and authentic Rwandan dining experiences.

DAY 2: VOLCANOES TO BWINDI (NKURINGO SECTION)

Morning (7:00 AM – 9:00 AM)

After an early breakfast, begin your scenic drive toward Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The 4–5-hour journey takes you through some of East Africa’s most beautiful countryside. You’ll pass through the southwestern region of Rwanda, crossing into Uganda at the Kisoro border. Stop en route to visit local communities and experience authentic regional culture.

Border Crossing (9:00 AM – 10:00 AM)

Your guide will manage all border formalities at the Rwanda-Uganda border. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months. Uganda requires a visa for most nationalities (available on arrival or online). The crossing typically takes 30-60 minutes depending on border activity.

Drive to Nkuringo (10:00 AM – 3:00 PM)

Continue south toward the Nkuringo section of Bwindi, located in the southwestern corner of the park near the Ugandan-Congolese border. This scenic 3-hour drive offers spectacular views of the Albertine Rift Valley, terraced hillsides, and panoramic vistas. Nkuringo is considerably more remote and less visited than the northern sections of Bwindi, offering an authentic wilderness experience. The landscape becomes increasingly dramatic as you approach, with steep forested hillsides and the sounds of the forest growing louder.

Arrival and Acclimatization (3:00 PM – 6:00 PM)

Settle into your accommodation and enjoy a relaxed evening. Nkuringo’s remoteness means fewer infrastructure amenities, but considerably more authenticity. Take a short walk around the lodge grounds to acclimate to the altitude (approximately 2,100 meters) and enjoy the highland forest atmosphere. Dine on local Ugandan cuisine as you prepare mentally for tomorrow’s trek.

Overnight

Accommodation: Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge or similar eco-lodge in the region. These intimate establishments offer warm hospitality, cozy accommodations, and stunning forest views. Many feature open fireplaces and veranda seating where you can listen to the forest’s nocturnal symphony.

DAY 3: GORILLA TREKKING IN BWINDI (NKURINGO SECTION)

Early Morning Preparation (5:30 AM – 6:30 AM)

Rise before dawn for a quick breakfast and final preparations. Pack plenty of water, snacks, and your camera equipment. Wear layered clothing—the forest can be cool at dawn but warm during the day. Sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support are essential, as Bwindi’s terrain is considerably more challenging than Volcanoes, with steep slopes and muddy conditions.

Gorilla Trek – Bwindi Nkuringo (6:30 AM – 3:00 PM)

This is undoubtedly the more challenging of your two treks. Bwindi’s impenetrable forest requires more strenuous hiking than Volcanoes, with elevation gains often exceeding 800 meters. The trek typically lasts 6-8 hours, covering 8-12 kilometers through thick vegetation. However, the rewards are extraordinary—Nkuringo’s gorillas are habituated to human presence but remain in their most natural state. You may encounter the Nkuringo Gorilla Family, known for their dynamic family structure and frequent interactions. The forest canopy creates magical light effects, and bird watching opportunities abound with over 300 bird species recorded in Bwindi.

Your guide will point out forest elephants’ trails, various primate species, and medicinal plants used by local communities. When you find your gorilla family, settle in for your hour of observation. The experience in Bwindi, though more physically demanding, often feels more intimate and wilder than Volcanoes.

Return and Rest (3:00 PM – 6:00 PM)

Trek back to your lodge, your muscles earning the restorative rest ahead. Share meals with your guide and other trekkers, exchanging experiences from both gorilla encounters. The evening’s reflection time allows you to process the profound privilege of having witnessed these endangered primates in their natural habitat.

Overnight

Accommodation: Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge or similar

DAY 4: RETURN TO KIGALI

Morning (7:00 AM – 9:00 AM)

After a leisurely breakfast, begin your return journey northward. The drive back to Kigali takes approximately 6-7 hours, depending on border crossing times and traffic conditions. The route retraces your journey through Kisoro and Rwanda’s southwestern highlands.

Drive to Kigali (9:00 AM – 4:00 PM)

Stop for lunch in the charming town of Kisoro or en route to Kigali. This extended drive provides time for reflection on your remarkable experience. Listen as your guide shares insights about gorilla conservation, community initiatives supporting the parks, and the future of these magnificent primates.

Arrival in Kigali (4:00 PM – 5:00 PM)

Arrive at your Kigali hotel in the late afternoon. Spend the evening relaxing, organizing photographs, and beginning to process your adventure. Many travellers visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial or Rwanda’s excellent craft markets this evening, though rest and reflection are equally worthwhile.

Optional Evening Activity

Visit the Inema Arts Center or explore Kigali’s vibrant dining scene to celebrate your successful gorilla safari.

End of the 4 Day Double Gorilla Trekking Safari.
