7 Days Congo Primate Tracking Safari

Day 1: Transfer to Bukavu

A Gorilla Adventure Tours safari guide will pick you from either your hotel in Kigali or the airport, brief you about this 7 Days Congo Primate Tracking Safari adventure and take you on a 6-7 hours’ drive to Bukavu via stunning Nyungwe forest and overlooking the rolling Kigezi hills. You will have a stopover at the Museum and at the Kings palace as you proceed with your journey to Rusizi border for clearance and finally enter into Democratic Republic of Congo direct to Bukavu where you will spend your 1st night nearer to Kahuzi Biega National park.

Day 2: Lowland Gorilla Trekking in Kahuzi Biega National Park

After breakfast you will meet your driver for a drive to the park headquarters to attend briefing about Eastern Lowland Gorilla trekking, the dos and don’ts during the trek and many other possible information before finally embarking on a forest walk to search for these primates in their habitats. Eastern Lowland Gorilla trekking takes about 1-7 hours depending on the movement of gorillas and trekking speed of the slowest person in the group. You will have only 1 hour with the gorillas taking photos and finally exit the forest back to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Boat Transfer from Bukavu to Goma

After an early morning breakfast, you will meet your safari driver ready to take you for a boat cruise along Lake Kivu as you cross over from Bukavu to Goma. This boat cruise takes about 3 hours and by 11:00am, you will be expected at Virunga Tourism offices at Grande Barriere ready for clearances and by 11:30 am, you will be transferred by the convoy to your lodge in Rumangabo where you will arrive in time for lunch, check in at Mikeno Lodge for lunch and choose either to spend your evening at leisure or have a walk to the surrounding local communities.

Day 4: Gorilla Trekking in Virunga National Park

Your day will start with an early morning breakfast after which you will head to Bukima Ranger post for briefing about gorilla trekking before embarking on a forest walk to search for the habituated endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitats. After briefing by rangers, set off on a walk via different trails as you search for the gorillas that have been habituated and used to humans. The walk takes about 2-4 hours until you finally meet the gorillas then spend only 1 hour in their presence taking photos, and later on exit back to Bukima to meet your driver for a drive to Bukima Tented Camp where you will spend a night today.

Day 5: 2nd Gorilla Trekking in Virunga National Park

You will be returned to Bukima ranger post for briefing before embarking on a second day encounter with the mountain gorillas in their natural habitats. You may request for a different gorilla family to have an overall experience with different gorilla groups in Virunga National Park. After briefing, you will enter the forest for a second gorilla trekking experience. After this trek, you will head to Mikeno lodge where you will visit the Senkwekwe gorilla orphanage in the afternoon. Return to Mikeno lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Chimpanzee trekking in Virunga national park

Arise from your bed as early as possible and be led into the forest in Rumangabo where chimpanzee trekking in Virunga National Park is conducted. The trek starts as early as 6:00am and after finding chimpanzees, you as well have 1 hour of photo taking and later on exit the forest back to your lodge for a late breakfast. Rest up or have a walk around the park headquarters awaiting dinner and overnight.

Day 7: Return to Kigali for departures

Check out of the lodge ready to meet your safari driver for a transfer to Goma where you will then connect to Kigali and be dropped off either at the hotel or direct at Kigali International Airport for your departure flight.
